Interview with Mad Mike Hughes’ Flat Earth rocket team – Going Alone

I met “Mad Mike Hughes” and “Pioneer Pat” a few miles east of Amboy where they’d assembled Mike’s steam-powered rocket ahead of a scheduled flight 1800 feet into the air and a mile across the desert. Mike’s life would rely on his ability to deploy a hand-operated parachute shortly after achieving flight apogee, and in time to arrest a gravity-aided hard return to Earth. The men were nice enough to allow me to interview them while they completed their pre-flight preparations. I rode away on my motorcycle unconvinced that either of the men fully believed the claim of “Flat Earth” emblazoned on the side of the rocket, and suspicious that their real interests were more akin to adventure, engineering, and the spirit and will of Going Alone.
